Scientific Copyeditor (Freelance)

Type: Part-time

JMIR Publications, a rapidly growing open-access publisher of peer-reviewed STM journals with an emphasis on medicine, health, and technology, is seeking experienced, self-motivated Copyeditors. We are one of the fastest-growing companies in Canada with a strong social mission: To transform scholarly communication and make health and medical information available to people when they need it. While our primary users and clients are academic authors and researchers, we are increasingly developing innovative products and services for other user groups such as patients and consumers.

We are seeking experienced and enthusiastic individuals for our Freelance Scientific Copyeditor position. This position is remote and candidates from all countries are welcome to apply.

Academic background:

  • University or college degree/diploma in STEM fields (physical sciences, technology, engineering, medicine, health care, life sciences, etc).

Required skills and qualifications:

  • At least 2 years of prior scientific copyediting experience

  • Strong English written and verbal skills

  • Familiarity and experience with AMA Style (American Medical Association Manual of Style, 11th edition)

  • Professional command of Microsoft Word, including use of track changes and formatting

  • Ability to pivot between tasks and prioritize tasks, when required

  • Flexibility, adaptability, speed, and attention to detail


  • Knowledge of the scientific publishing industry and conventions

  • Experience with OJS 2.2 (online manuscript tracking system)

  • Affinity toward technology, computer literacy, and experience with web-based systems

  • A sound understanding of statistical reporting in medicine (eg, How to Report Statistics in Medicine: Annotated Guidelines for Authors, Editors, and Reviewers [Medical Writing and Communication]. Thomas A. Lang)


  • Copyedit manuscripts for English language (in particular, for non-native writers)

  • Apply journal formatting and style

  • Check the completeness and “face validity” of statistical reporting

  • Check and correct references using our integrated, automated RefCheck (OrangeX) software

  • Check author information in our metadata form for the correctness and edit it, if necessary

  • Query and communicate with authors

  • Meet monthly targets for copyediting manuscripts

  • Maintain quality standards
