If precision is your passion and the fast-paced world of scholarly publishing excites you, we invite you to join our team as a Copyediting QC Specialist. We are seeking an experienced, detail-oriented, and highly efficient individual who will play a critical part in ensuring the quality and accuracy of academic research manuscripts prior to publication. Your expertise in language, style, and formatting, along with your knowledge of scholarly publishing, will be essential in upholding our high standards of excellence. 

This is a full-time role that allows you to work remotely, except for occasional in-person meetings at our downtown Toronto office. We invite applications from eligible candidates currently residing in or around the Greater Toronto Area (Ontario, Canada). 

Qualifications

Education 

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher, preferably in a STEM field

Experience

  • Two or more years of experience copyediting research manuscripts (in English)

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in academic and research writing conventions, encompassing reference styles, statistical reporting, and ethical considerations

  • Knowledge of the American Medical Association (AMA) Manual of Style: A Guide for Authors and Editors (11th Edition)

  • Proficiency in MS Word (including Track Changes), Google Suite, and other relevant tools

Additional Desirable Skills

  • Strong knowledge of scholarly publishing workflows and processes

  • Experience with web-based editing systems is a plus

  • Sound understanding of statistical reporting in medicine

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Scope of work includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Quality control review: Conduct comprehensive reviews of copyedited manuscripts to identify and correct errors, ensuring adherence to the highest standards of grammar, language, style, formatting, and the AMA Manual of Style. Use our integrated reference software to check, revise, and format references for accuracy and consistency. Consistently meet monthly productivity targets.

  • Content evaluation: Assess manuscripts for overall clarity and logical flow, and identify potential areas for improvement or clarification. Verify the completeness and “face validity” of statistical reporting in manuscripts.

  • Issue resolution: Collaborate with copyeditors, authors, and internal stakeholders to resolve complex or nuanced problems in a timely manner.

  • Publication readiness check: Ensure manuscripts are fully prepared for final proofreading and production stages, adhering to standard journal guidelines and processes.

  • Feedback and process improvement: Provide constructive feedback to copyeditors on an ongoing basis. Collaborate with the supervisor/manager to evaluate quality patterns, continually update internal style guides, and make suggestions to optimize workflow and processes.

  • Copyediting (as needed): Occasionally copyedit research manuscripts to improve language clarity, grammar, readability, style, and formatting (in particular, for non-native English-speaking or ESL authors) in conformance with the journal and AMA style guidelines.
