While our primary users and clients are academic authors and researchers, we are increasingly developing innovative products and services for other user groups such as patients and consumers. We are seeking experienced and enthusiastic individuals for the position of Scientific Copyeditor (full-time, in-house position). Required qualifications:

  • Prior copyediting experience

  • Background in STEM fields

  • Strong written and verbal English skills

  • Flexibility, speed, and attention to detail

  • Familiarity and experience with the American Medical Association (AMA) Manual of Style: A Guide for Authors and Editors, 11th ed.

  • Professional command of Microsoft Word, including use of track changes and formatting

  • Ability to pivot between tasks and prioritize tasks, when required

Preferred skills:

  • Experience in scientific editing

  • Knowledge of scientific publishing

  • Experience with OJS 2.2 (online manuscript tracking system) is an asset

  • Affinity toward technology, computer literacy, and experience with web-based systems

  • A sound understanding of statistical reporting in medicine (eg, How to Report Statistics in Medicine: Annotated Guidelines for Authors, Editors, and Reviewers [Medical Writing and Communication], Thomas A. Lang)

Responsibilities:

  • Copyedit manuscripts for style and language (in particular, for non-native or ESL authors) in conformance to the journal and AMA style guides

  • Meet monthly targets for copyediting manuscripts

  • Mark up MS Word documents using track changes and apply specific formatting

  • Check the completeness and “face validity” of statistical reporting

  • Check and correct references using our integrated, automated RefCheck (OrangeX) software (the software automatically retrieves reference data from various bibliographic databases and auto-populates the required fields).

  • Check and edit author data in our metadata form for correctness

  • Query and communicate with authors

  • Continuously update our style guide and make suggestions for improvements of workflow and processes

  • Liaise with our Engineering team to improve processes and help with resolving any bugs arising in the system (forward ideas how the system can be improved, file bug reports, etc)

Schedule:Monday to Friday, 9:00 am – 5:30 pm (flex) Experience:

  • Copyediting: 3 years (preferred)

  • AMA: 1 year (preferred)
