JMIR Publications, a publisher of peer-reviewed STM journals with an emphasis on medicine, health, and technology titles, is seeking an enthusiastic, self-motivated Copyeditors. We are a rapidly growing open access publisher (Growth500 company - one of the fastest-growing companies in Canada) with a strong social mission: To transform scholarly communication, and to make health and medical information available to people when they need it. While our primary users and clients are academic authors and researchers, we are increasingly developing innovative products and services for other user groups such as patients and consumers.

We are seeking experienced, enthusiastic individuals for our full-time in-house Scientific Copyeditor position. The ideal candidate will have the required experience and skills noted below, along with a positive outlook and will to learn. 

Required qualifications:

  • Prior scientific copyediting experience

  • Background in STEM fields

  • Strong command of the English language - written and verbal

     

  • Important skills: high editing speed, flexibility, attention to detail, and deadline adherence

  • Familiarity and experience with AMA Style (11th Ed)

  • Professional command of Microsoft Word, including use of track changes and formatting

  • Ability to pivot between tasks and prioritize tasks, when required

Preferred skills:

  • Knowledge of scientific publishing preferred

  • Experience with OJS 2.2 (online manuscript tracking system) is an asset

  • Comfortable using technology, good computer literacy, and experience with web-based systems

     

  • A sound understanding of statistical reporting in medicine is an asset (eg, How to Report Statistics in Medicine: Annotated Guidelines for Authors, Editors, and Reviewers [Medical Writing and Communication]. Thomas A. Lang)

Responsibilities:

  • Edit manuscripts for style, language (spelling, grammar, punctuation, syntax), and readability (particularly for non-native writers) in American English. 

  • Check the completeness and “face validity” of statistical reporting.

  • Check article metadata.

     

  • Format manuscripts as per our JMIR house style and AMA style (11th Ed).

  • Check and correct references using our integrated, automated RefCheck (OrangeX) software

  • Author communication

  • Continuously update our Knowledge Base articles

  • File bug reports and liaise with our technical team for any technical issues hampering the workflow

  • Participate in publication team meetings and make suggestions for improvements of workflow or style guide-related processes
