Journal Manager

JMIR Publications, a leading publisher of peer reviewed STM journals with an emphasis on medicine, health and technology titles, is seeking enthusiastic candidates (preferably with a science background) for the position of Journal Manager.

Required skills:

  • Preferably a health, medicine, science, information technology, library/information science degree with demonstrated scientific experience (not: journalism or arts degrees

  • Excellent proofreading/writing skills in (American) English

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to consistently meet deadlines

  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative

  • Ability to work effectively in teams and groups

  • Ability to directly manage other staff

  • Sound and mature judgment; decisive and tactful when working with multiple stakeholders

  • Technical proficiency, with hands-on skills using current software such as Google Suite, Microsoft Word, etc.

  • Experience in peer-reviewed STM publishing is a plus

  • Must be Canadian citizen/permanent resident

What you'll be doing:

  • Managing the editorial boards of key journals (a subset of JMIR’s 30+ journal portfolio)

  • Recruiting new members, including Editors-in-Chief whenever necessary

  • Onboarding and training new editorial board members

  • Working with the Peer Review Manager overseeing submissions in peer review and supervising peer-review assignment by in-house staff

  • Ensuring that editorial board members are on task

  • Coordinating on-time publication of theme issues and conference abstracts

  • Participate in activities related to established journals and/or the launch of new journals

  • Perform quality control on incoming manuscripts

  • Communicate with academic editors to ensure the timely and on-target execution of journal goals

  • Ensuring instructions for authors reflect the current Editorial and Production processes

  • Supporting authors throughout the publication process

  • Providing key insights into journal performance, competitive landscape for use by Editors-in-Chief and JMIR marketing initiatives

  • Providing user support, including for pre-acceptance queries, through the Zendesk ticket system

  • Writing FAQ articles for end users and staff

  • Working with the Editorial Director, Editorial Manager, and the technical team on pilot projects
