JMIR Publications is seeking a qualified, full-time Academic Editor to assume editorial responsibility for its flagship journal, Journal of Medical Internet Research (JMIR). Over its 20-year history, the Journal of Medical Internet Research has received continued recognition as a leading digital health journal, both in quality (leading impact factors) and quantity (number of articles published). Working with the Publishing Director and Founder, Dr. Gunther Eysenbach, and current co-Editors-in-Chief of the journal, the successful candidate will assume editorial responsibility of this well-respected journal and lead it to the next level of excellence.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Working with a team of editorial board members to shape, lead, and execute the journal’s editorial scope. This includes;

  • Setting priorities and objectives for the journal

  • Implementing strategies for increasing the number of original high-quality submissions, usage, citations and other measures of success for the journal, in line with JMIR’s publishing strategy

  • Re-building/refreshing the editorial board by recruiting and selecting editorial board members and active section editors

  • Overseeing the peer review of journal content

  • Championing ways to improve the diversity of authors and editorial contributors and to foster a more equitable and inclusive editorial process

  • Supporting the highest standards of publication ethics in concert with the JMIR team, according to the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE)

The JMIR publishing staff will provide training in editorial processes and the online submission/peer review system, and will offer ample advice, support, and assistance as required.


The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:


  • PhD, MD, MD/PhD in the field of digital health, medical informatics, behavioral sciences, or a similar field


  • Highly regarded, internationally recognized, active biomedical scientist or academic clinician active in the fields mentioned above

  • Editorial experience as a journal editor and/or deputy or associate editor in a biomedical journal with experience in the peer-review process and communicating with authors, reviewers, and publishers

  • History of publishing with JMIR journals and/or a verified record as an author in scholarly publications

  • Familiarity with reporting standards and ethical guidelines for publishing as well as awareness of the current new developments and changes in the publishing environment, such as preprints


  • Passionate about health research and technology, innovation, and health information dissemination

  • Energetic and innovative leader, committed to maintaining a high level of integrity while delivering high-quality research quickly and efficiently

  • Thought leader who will drive strategy and innovation in publishing and digital health; foster a community of authors, editors, and reviewers; and solicit high-quality research from leading authors in the field
